Henry VII was not heir to the throne when he became king. His father, Edmund Tudor was of Welsh royal heritage which meant nothing to the throne of England. Henry's mother, however, was a descent from King Edward III. Henry's pursue of the crown happened on the battle of Bosworth Field where he won the battle and was rewarded the crown.
Henry had 6 children to his wife, Elizabeth of York. Only four of his children survived infancy; Arthur, Henry, Margaret and Mary.
